GREEN WHISTLE REFEREES
At the WCBA, we are proud to support Basketball Victoria’s Green Whistle initiative.
This program reflects Basketball Victoria’s commitment – and ours – to fostering a safe, respectful and supportive environment for all members of our basketball community, especially our young and developing referees.
The Green Whistle initiative highlights and protects referees under the age of 18 by increasing awareness of their age and encouraging greater empathy, patience and respect from players, coaches and spectators across every venue we participate in.
WHY GREEN WHISTLE?
Demonstrates our shared commitment with Basketball Victoria to uphold the Victorian Child Safe Standards.
Strengthens respect and understanding for young officials as they learn and grow.
Promotes positive sideline behaviour, helping create a welcoming environment where under-18 referees feel supported, safe and empowered to develop their skills.
HOW IT WORKS?
Referees under 18 will use a green whistle when officiating games.
Associations – including the WCBA – actively communicate and promote the initiative within their communities.
Referee Supervisors, Referee Coaches and Venue Supervisors will monitor conduct and provide support where needed.
The initiative aligns fully with Basketball Victoria’s Child Safeguarding Policy.
